US group Thompson Hotels launches in London

Thompson Hotels, the US luxury design-driven hotel management company, is to open its first European property in London in summer 2011.

The 85-bedroom Belgraves hotel is being developed on the site of the former Sheraton Belgravia, which closed at the end of last year. Being developed as a joint venture with the Hong Kong-based Harilela Group, the hotel will include an 80-seat destination restaurant and a library bar.

Interiors will be by British designer Tara Bernerd, with the architectural design by EPR Architects.

Thompson Hotels is a partnership between Larry, Michael and Jason Pomeranc and Stephen Brandman. The company currently operates five hotels in New York - including its original property, 60 Thompson - and two in Los Angeles, as well as properties in Washington, Chicago and Toronto.

Belgraves will be the group's first hotel in Europe and is part of the company's expansion plans to create a portfolio of small, elite hotels in gateway cities around the world. After London, Seoul will be the next international destination for the launch of a Thompson hotel.
