Four food and beverage outlets set for the Shangri-La in the Shard

Set to open at the end of July, the 202-bedroom hotel located on floors 34 to 52 of Europe's tallest building will feature a cake shop, a restaurant serving locally inspired dishes, a lounge with an Asian-focused menu and a destination bar.

The upmarket Gourmet cake shop and delicatessen will be on the ground floor at the hotel's entrance on St Thomas Street. It will serve a host of sandwiches, pastries and cakes - to eat-in and take-out - which will emulate Shangri-La's successful cake shops in Hong Kong and Beijing.

Level 35 is where the 90-seat Shard 35 restaurant, serving a European-inspired menu using produce from local markets, and the 30-seat Lobby lounge, will be located.

Alongside light meals and afternoon tea, the Lobby Lounge will feature one of the largest selection of Chinese teas in London, with an emphasis on Asian inspired dishes such as Hainan chicken rice, laksa, nasi goreng, char kuey teow and wonton soup

The 80-seat capacity Gong bar on the 52nd floor will be open for evenings only and will specialise in Champagne and cocktails. A key feature will be the moveable wall which, at night, will open onto the swimming pool.

Meanwhile, the Hotel will have three function spaces on level 34: the Thames Ballroom with capacity for 110-covers for a sit-down dinner, London Bridge Room (30 covers), and the Tower Bridge Room (10). A wedding licence will enable the hotel to play host to the highest weddings in the UK, with stunning backdrop of the city in every direction via the floor-to-ceiling windows throughout.

Darren Gearing, the hotel's general manager said that he has been enormously encouraged by the response to the 30 managerial job positions which have so far been advertised. "We have received more than 2,000 applications - many which are of a very high quality," he said. "The remaining 270 jobs will be advertised from mid-April."

Key appointments so far include Emile Minev, who previously worked for Shangri-La in Tokyo and the Maldives, as executive chef. Nicholas Liang will be returning to work in London, where he was previously with Mandarin Oriental, as the hotels food and beverage director. Most recently he was at the Shangri-La China World Summit in Beijing. And Frank Motzkus, has been appointed from the Shangri-La Bangkok as director of rooms.
