Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs launch second consultation on St Michael's development

A second public consultation has been opened on the St Michael's development, being led by Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs, after widespread opposition to the original plans for the scheme.

The new plans retain the Sir Ralph Abercromby pub, which the former footballers conceded was of "emotional importance to the community", as well as retaining the Bottle Street Police Station frontage. Designs for a 134.5m tower have also been scaled back.

The changes follow a consultation in July visited by 400 people.

Responding to the revised plans, Historic England's said: "The new masterplan with its commitment to mixed use development and active street frontages is a more positive urban design response, outward looking and engaging with the street. It is therefore welcomed as a positive response."

The full scheme is made up of a 200-bedroom hotel, 170 residential apartments, 147,000 sq ft of office space and 32,000 sq ft leisure space.

Gary Neville said: "This scheme has attracted national interest as well as passionate views in the Manchester community. We promised to present the tower and rooftop designs to seek responses before we submit the final plan for consent, and so we're delighted to reveal them now.

"We were encouraged by the generally positive response to July's consultation and by calls from certain quarters to be bold in our ambition and create something remarkable on the city's skyline.

"We have kept faith with our central vision of creating a true world-class, mixed-use destination with a signature development of the highest quality including residential living, Grade A offices, a five-star hotel, exciting retail and leisure units and unique outdoor spaces."

He added that subject to planning approval work would begin by summer 2018.
