Climate change protesters cost West End businesses £10m in two days

London's West End businesses lost £10m in the first two days of this week's climate change protests as Extension Rebellion targeted Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus and Marble Arch.

Almost 300 campaigners were arrested across Monday and Tuesday as campaigners blocked traffic at central London sites.

In response, a business group representing the West End has called for the Mayor of London and Metropolitan Police to take control of the situation.

New West End London, which represents 600 retail, restaurant, hotel and property owners, said it supported the right of campaigners to protest peacefully but was deeply concerned about the pressure being placed on businesses.

Chief executive Jace Tyrrell told BBC News London that staff had struggled to travel to the area and businesses had reported sales declines of 25%.
