Persian restaurant Chello to open in Surrey

Chello restaurant, serving modern Persian cuisine, is set to open at the end of the month in West Byfleet, Surrey.

First-time restaurateurs Daniel and Leila Suley are opening the site on 31 August in an old Sainsbury's building on Old Woking Road.

The restaurant is named after the Persian rice the restaurant will serve with kebabs and stews such as gheyme (an Iranian stew made with split peas and cubed lamb), as well as less meat-heavy, vegetarian and vegan options.

It will feature a 75-cover restaurant and a 15-cover lounge, which will serve smaller, tapas-style portions of the dishes served in the restaurant.

Daniel previously worked as an electrician and carpenter and has built a wooden bar for the restaurant.

The family has spent approximately £120,000 restoring the building and its ornate woodwork and Minton, Hollins & Co ceramic tiles, which were designed for Sainsbury's stores in the late 1800s/early 1900s. They are funding the restaurant themselves.

"It's something they've dreamed of for years," said Daniel and Leila's daughter Ailar, who is also helping with the restaurant. Both her parents worked in her grandfather's restaurant in Iran and will be overseeing the menu and front of house.

Ailar added: "Their goal is to give people who are not familiar with Iranian food a venue they can come to and become familiar with it and share their love and passion for the food with everybody else, but it's also for the Iranian community that live out here, for them to have a place that they can go to for a flavour of home."
