Interstate Europe to manage Bodmin Jail hotel

Interstate Europe Hotels & Resorts has been appointed to manage the luxury hotel being developed at Bodmin Jail in Cornwall.

The property is undergoing a multi-million pound transformation into a hotel and visitor attraction and the third-party hotel management company, which has a portfolio of more than 70 UK hotels, will manage the 63-bedroom upscale hotel when it opens in 2019.

London-based Twelve Architects has been appointed by owner Mallino Development Group to create a visitor attraction, teaching facility, venue space and hotel, while also preserving the prison's historical features.

Located on the edge of Bodmin Moor, the jail was built in 1779 and was the site of more than 50 public hangings before it closed as a prison in 1927.

Nicholas Northam, managing director for the UK at Interstate Europe Hotels & Resorts, said: "The Bodmin Jail development is a really unique project and one that we're thrilled to be involved with."

Hannah Barker, senior architect at Twelve Architects, said: "Our team has created a design that forges a symbiotic relationship between the building's different functions while making the most of the building's magical interior and exposed walls."

Guest bedrooms will be created by cutting through the cell walls, which measure more than half-a-metre thick, converting the 8sqm cells into comfortable bedrooms.
