86-year-old starts career as hotelier
Bristol's newest hotelier has launched his first venture in the industry, aged 86.
Former university lecturer James Gluck has opened the 24-bedroom Baldwins hotel in Bristol's city centre.
Gluck retired to the UK from South Africa 10 years ago and sank his savings into the building, which legal firms then occupied. When the tenants left, he decided to turn the building into a hotel.
"I am trying to make a go of it, but already it is very difficult", said Gluck, who lectured in Islamic linguistics and speaks a dozen languages. "At the moment I am helping to do everything - cleaning rooms and so on - but I hope to get more staff to help change this.
"It is hard work, and I don't know how long I will be able to carry on. Perhaps someone will want to take it on in 10 years if it has become an important place."
