A volatile three months

Question

"I am 28 years old. I have a history within the hotel sector but have recently experienced a "volatile" three months, going from corporate hotel environment into a high-street restaurant brand, back into an independent four-star hotel. I have in the last 24 hours been made redundant due to lack of experience in effective man management. I graduated from university in 1996. I am now very uncertain as to which direction suits me. I am fairly competent in admin, easy going, reliable and hard working. I have experience in all aspects of hotel work from restaurant to housekeeping, including several positions that involved duty management. If you have any advice for an appropriate course of employment/direction, I would be very grateful."

"Bad luck. It sounds as if you've had a rough few months and now you must really sit down and accurately evaluate your strengths and what you can offer a prospective employer and above all stabilise the situation you are in. to join a company in the right position (maybe a sideways or slightly backwards step) but with sufficient opportunity for promotion and development that is able to move you on as your confidence and performance improves. Á¢Â€ÂœBe realistic on salary, knowing there is scope for this to improve as you develop. I would encourage you to be very up front with your prospective employers about what you are seeking and very discerning in your selection of the company you join so that in one yearÁ¢Â€Â™s time you are on track again and can look back on this bad patch as Á¢Â€ÂœhistoryÁ¢Â€Â and a learning curve. Á¢Â€ÂœDont give up, there will be a spot for you out there, you just need to focus now on finding it.Á¢Â€Â
