Asking about leave

Asking about leave

Question

I have worked in the catering industry for 10 years. My last role was as operations manager at a private sports club. During the summer I taught business English in Madrid, because I wanted to learn Spanish, enjoy a decent summer for a change and indulge in my passion for Spanish food. I am now looking to get back into catering in London from the beginning of October. My problem is that I will need to take at least three to four weeks' leave at the end of November to help my parents in Germany who are moving their catering business to a different location.

I am looking to get a position in conference and banqueting sales or management or take a job that is HR- or training-orientated. How difficult do you think it will be to find a new job? And at which stage of the application process should I mention the issue of leave?

I would recommend that you mention your leave needs during your first interview. This way you can ensure you will be aware of any complications. If you don't mention it until further along the interview process you might find that it stops you being able to accept a position, which would lead to frustrations all round. I am sure you have considered that the period you want to take as a holiday will be a busy time of year for the industry and so it will need careful planning if you are to get agreement. Another option would be to do temporary work. This would give you the flexibility you require, as well as a valuable opportunity to work in different companies. Many temporary positions lead to permanent work too, so why not discuss this with a reputable recruitment agency? A consultant will help you get the type of job you will enjoy, as well as cater for your leave requirements.
