BBPA launches new pub chef award

A new award celebrating pub chefs has been created by the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) and the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group.

The Parliamentary Pub Chef of the Year award is in partnership with Nestlé Professional, and asks all MPs to nominate pub chefs or chefs in their constituency who are renowned for good food. A panel of industry judges will decide a winner, with the prize set to be presented in the New Year.

The award launch comes just months after the BBPA set up the Pub Chef Passion Initiative, in conjunction with the British Institute of Innkeepers (BII), and the Perceptions Group, aiming to promote the pub chef role as a viable career option.

According to the BBPA, UK pubs serve almost a billion meals a year, with more and more venues putting good food at the heart of their offer.

Brigid Simmonds, BBPA chief executive, said: "I am delighted to be launching this new award. A career as a pub chef is exciting and demanding, and it offers young people development, rewards and a great working environment. Pubs are increasingly serving very high quality food, and for ambitious chefs, it's a great chance to take control of your own kitchen. I think it is time that we recognise the efforts of superb pub chefs up and down the country."

The All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group is a cross-party group of MPs, which seeks to highlight the contribution of brewing and pubs to the UK economy and society.

In recent years, the Good Pub Guide has championed pubs that seek to offer high-quality food, although some critics have claimed it has supported establishments with good menus to the detriment of more drinks-led pubs.

In the 2014 edition, editors Alistair Bird and Fiona Stapley wrote that some pubs were "stuck in the 1980s, happy with indifferent food, drink, service and surroundings", although a BBPA spokesperson commented that "it isn't just about gastropubs", and that the industry has "room for everybody".
