Guests put on the slot

THE Bartech Automatic System looks much like other minibars but for one crucial internal difference. Each product in the cabinet sits in its own monitored slot; a detection device reacts to the removal of the item and passes a message to reception so that purchase of the item can be recorded on the guest's statement.

While the wired-up cabinets are are more expensive than conventional "trust system" cabinets, the automatic monitoring concept has been found to deal very effectively with minibar dishonesty.

Figures cited by Bartech suggest that up to 40 per cent of conventional minibars are used dishonestly; thefts are difficult to stop and their prevention can damage guest goodwill.
