BLT is king of the sarnies

The humble BLT has beaten off competitors to become London and the South-east's top-selling sarnie, according to sandwich maker Daily Bread. A survey across 450 companies, institutions and venues showed that traditional British sandwich fillings on malted wheat bread win against more exotic breads like ciabatta and paninis.

Second place in 2004 went to egg and cress and third to tuna mayo with cucumber, while Cheddar and pickle and prawn mayonnaise were fourth and fifth.

But tastes have changed, with the BLT not even making the top five in 1989. Fifteen years ago chicken and salad was the nation's favourite, followed by ham and salad, while coronation chicken came in at number four. By 1994, egg mayonnaise was the top dog, succeeded by tuna mayo in 1999.

Overall favourites have consistently been egg mayonnaise and tuna mayonnaise and cucumber, which have featured in the top five best sellers for 15 years.
