Brewers Research & Education Fund inviting new grant applications

A fund offering support for scientific research and education into the brewing industry is inviting application for grants in 2016/17.

The Brewers Research & Education Fund (BREF) is accepting applications via the website of the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA), with the deadline on 31 March 2016. The fund can support research into topics such as new hop varieties, projects looking at energy and water use, and beer spoilage.

Other aims include the promotion of education, training and research into brewing; educating the public about beer consumption; and researching the nutritional value of beer in relation to diet and wellbeing.

The fund, which is administered by the Worshipful Company of Brewers, was founded from proceeds after the sale of the BBPA's original headquarters in Portman Square, London.

Brigid Simmonds, BBPA chief executive, encouraged applications and said: "I'm delighted the fund is open for another year. It has supported many important projects in recent years, and is a great legacy from the Brewers' Society and the Institute of Brewing."
