Campaign for Real Ale names cider pub of the year

The Old Poets' Corner pub in Ashover, Derbyshire has been named as the Campaign for Real Ale's (Camra) Cider Pub of the Year to mark Cider and Perry month.

Run by husband and wife duo Kim and Jackie Beresford, who took over in June 2004, the pub now offers up to five ciders with at least one perry.

The judging panel said: "We were very pleasantly surprised to find this little gem of a stone-built pub in the heart of the Derbyshire Peak District selling such a wonderful and interesting selection of traditional ciders and perries."

Runners up included the Penrhyn Arms, Penrynside, Conwy; the Banham Barrel, Banham, Norfolk; the Square & Compass, Worth Matravers.

Suppliers Merrylegs and Jon Hallam were given the 2006 Pomona Award in recognition of its contribution to cider in the UK.

National Cider Month and Cider Week starts on the 14 October.
