l A married woman of 50 working for a large hotel group for more than four years progressed through waitress, night duty manager and head housekeeper roles with no change to her hourly rate of £3.75 for a five-day week. Asked to sign a new contract reducing her working hours, rate of pay and status, she requested - and was refused - redundancy.

l A female trainee chef working in a hotel since September after a two-year college course is paid no more than the waitress: £1.90 an hour, or £87 for a five-day week of 11 hours a day.
