SCHOOL MEALS UP
UPTAKE of primary school meals in January was nearly 10% higher than for the month of October, according to a survey of 25 local authorities to gauge the success of November 1993's National School Meals Week.
In Shropshire the rise was 17.6%, in Dudley, West Midlands, 15%, in Cambridgeshire 13.7% and over 10% in Kirklees, West Sussex and Leicestershire. Caterers BET and CCG reported an 8-10% increase.
Roger Davis, chairman of the Local Authority Caterers Association (LACA), said that similar results across the whole country would equate to an extra 32,400 meals being served a day.
This year's National School Meals Week is being held from 4-11 November.
lLACA's telephone number has been changed to 0483 766777.
IEHO in crisis
THE Institution of Environmental Health Officers (IEHO) has been plunged into crisis following the suspension last week of finance and information director Clifton Wade and the sacking in January of chief executive Terry Brunt.
Mr Wade was suspended pending an inquiry into contracts with a computer company. Mr Brunt is appealing against his dismissal, which followed a shortfall in uptake of hygiene training courses, leaving the IEHO £350,000 out of pocket. Some 13 staff have been made redundant, while those leaving or on temporary contracts have not been replaced.
Linda Allen, promoted to director of operations in January, has taken over as acting chief executive.
CONMAN STOPPED
POLICE in Wells, Somerset, last week apprehended a man accused of staying at hotels in southern England without paying. Peter John Wayne appeared in court charged with burglary, theft and deception.
