Reports of food poisoning rise

REPORTED cases of food poisoning rose by a fifth in 1992 compared with the previous year, according to figures published last week by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys.

They showed 1992 had the highest-ever level of notifications since food poisoning became notifiable in 1949.

The Institution of Environmental Health Officers said this in no way indicated falling standards among caterers. "The figures are high because members of the public and doctors are more aware than ever of the need to report cases and of how to do so," a spokeswoman said.

lCommunicable Disease Statistics 1992 is available from HMSO bookshops, priced £10.
