WTB urges new Welsh map
THE map of Wales should be redrawn into 10 distinct areas for the purposes of tourism promotion and marketing, the Wales Tourist Board (WTB) recommended last week.
As part of its Tourism 2000 strategy, the WTB published a consultation paper based on independent research and aimed at introducing a more rational and co-ordinated approach to marketing holidays in Wales.
Its preliminary view is that there is "real scope" for reducing the number of different brochures promoting holiday destinations in the principality, thereby avoiding duplication of effort.
The board's new marketing map includes well-known area names such as Snowdonia, Pembrokeshire and West Wales.
Responsibility for the preparation of brochures for the 10 new areas would rest with either regional tourism companies or local authorities, or a combination of the two working together.
The WTB, which said it might be willing to provide some financial support for agreed area brochures, wants written comments on the paper by 31 October. Write to the WTB, Brunel House, 2 Fitzalan Road, Cardiff CF2 1UY.
Health failure
PUB-restaurants provide a disappointingly limited range of healthy options on their menus, according to a survey of six of the biggest chains by the Consumers' Association.
The association's Which? way to Health magazine, published last week, found that although all the chains provided "something that could be part of a healthy meal out", discerning diners "deserve a better deal".
Henry's Table, the Boddington-owned chain, was rated first "by a long way". The worst offender, according to the survey, was the Big Steak chain.
