Cumbrian pub wins first runner-up in Britain's Friendliest Business
Cumbrian pub the Pheasant Inn has won runner up in the finals of national competition Britain's Friendliest Business Award.
It wins a marketing consultancy package with a top London agency.
The inn impressed the judges thanks to its work in the community, including preparing Meals on Wheels twice a week, raising money for the local netball team, hosting two Age Concern lunches every month, and organising regular darts and quiz nights for locals.
Extra touches, such as giving visiting pub guests a lift back to their accommodation if they aren't able to get a taxi, were also commended.
The business also received nearly 500 messages of support via social media, which impressed the judges and were considered as part of the judging process.
Comments posted described the Inn as "the friendliest pub in the world" and "a fantastic family run business", while one said that "the staff go the extra mile".
The inn came second only to Helter Skelter Children's Play Centre in Broadstairs, Kent, which took the title of Britain's Friendliest Business (and won £10,000), while the Commercial Group in Cheltenham was a second runner-up.
Commenting on their award, the Jones family said: "We are very proud as a team to have achieved so much and got so far in this competition. We've had fantastic support. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took the time to participate and to those who continue to make The Pheasant the happiest and friendliest pub."
Chief executive of Liberis, Paul Mildenstein, added: "Without any doubt the Pheasant Inn is a praiseworthy runner-up and should be very proud. Its contribution to the community is outstanding. The loyalty and affection shown by customers and staff in return is plain to see."
The competition, which is open to businesses across many different sectors, was launched by Liberis to recognise companies making a special effort to look after their customers and staff. To date, the funder has provided over £70m to help small and medium businesses grow.
Another hospitality business, the Belfry in Yarcombe, was also shortlisted in January as one of 20 finalists, and praised for its local food sources and hosting of regular community events.
