Deregulation cuts gas bills

Fairfield House Hotel in Ayr, Strathclyde, has managed to halve its gas bills without even changing supplier.

The hotel paid 1.34p per kW/h for gas last year from Business Gas, the commercial arm of British Gas. When the contract came up for renewal last December, the hotel was offered a rate of 0.96p per kW/h.

Eleven months later, a Business Gas representative called again and offered the general manager, Geoff Dibble, a rate of 0.56p per month. Mr Dibble told Caterer he had been chased by other suppliers almost every day since the gas market was deregulated for users of at least 2,500 therms a year.

"It is useful for people in the industry to see what prices can be achieved - even without negotiation," he added.
