Edinburgh's Heidi Poolin dies at 71

Heidi Poolin, who was general manager at Edinburgh's Royal British hotel for 18 years, has died from cancer at the age of 71.

She was diagnosed with the illness two years ago , but carried on working until she lost the use of her legs last November. Her successor, former deputy general manager Lockhart Miller, described her as "an extraordinary person".

He said she had worked her way through the ranks from waitress to deputy general manager at Edinburgh's Grosvenor hotel. After 22 years there she was poached by a former general manager who had acquired the Royal British hotel (now part of the Cairn Hotel Group).
