ESS platform for success

An offshore oil and gas platform has won a national healthy-eating award for the first time. Compass division ESS Support Services Worldwide received the Scottish Healthy Choices award for catering excellence last week. It provides meals for 60 men who live and work on the Captain WPP platform, 90 miles off the Aberdeen coast.

The platform was highly commended for its standard of hygiene, and promotion and provision of meals low in salt, sugar and fat. Serving meals on the oil rig is a 24-hour operation. The six-strong catering team provide meals about every four hours, with snacks available all the time.

Chef-manager Mike Russell said: "Workers coming off night shift will want an evening meal, while those just going on will want breakfast, so there's quite a lot of attention paid to individual requirements."
