Suppliers to the hospitality industry have the chance for their products to shine and stand out from the crowd through a brand new Awards scheme launched by Catering Update.

The Catering Update Excellence in Food and Drink Awards 2003 are designed to recognise excellence among products available in the food service sector and to raise the profile of good food and drink to the whole industry.

The event will build into the most prestigious food and drink awards in the hospitality industry and will culminate in a special awards presentation at The Landmark Hotel, London, on 7 November - a brilliant finale to a really exciting competition.

There are 14 awards categories so that a broad range of food and drink products of the highest calibre from across the industry have the opportunity to enter the competition.

Entrants will be competing to win the prestigious Excellence Awards trophies which will denote their product as best in category.

A rigorous judging process will ensure that only the best products available make it through to the final stages of this exciting awards competition.

Each product entered will be carefully prepared by home economists in accordance with manufacturers' instructions and presented for a series of rigorous tasting sessions by a distinguished judging panel of chefs, operators, product development experts, food and wine writers and brand experts among others. The judges will look for quality in taste, texture and aroma, and excellence in presentation and packaging.

The children's food category will be judged with the help of a discriminating panel of young foodies.

The competition is open to manufacturers or distributors of food and drink products and entries can be either new launches or established products that have stood the test of time. The products can be branded or own label and all products must be entered individually, not as ranges. Products must be available for caterers to purchase by October 31 2003 - products still at the development stage are not eligible.

ACCOMPANIMENTS & INGREDIENTS (Including gravies, sauces, chutneys, pickles, dressings, oils, preserves, condiments, spices, herbs and baking ingredients)

ALCOHOLIC DRINKS
(wines, beers, ciders and spirits)

BAKERY & SANDWICHES
Pies, pasties, bread, cakes, savoury and sweet biscuits

CHEESES, DAIRY & MILK PRODUCTS
(Including drinks, custards, yogurt, fromage frais, butter, spreads, cream and cream alternatives)

CONFECTIONERY DESSERTS & PUDDINGS
(Ambient, chilled or frozen and ice creams)

MEAT, POULTRY, GAME & FISH

HOT BEVERAGES
(Tea, coffee, herbal teas and infusions, cocoa and malt-based drinks)

KID'S AWARD
(Any food or drink products aimed at children, not infants)

ORGANIC
(Any organic product)

READY MEALS
(Starters and main courses. Ambient, chilled frozen, including ethnic ready meals)

SOFT DRINKS
(Carbonates, fruit juices, squashes, smoothies, cordials, mixers and bottled water)

TINNED PRODUCTS
(Including pulses, fruits etc)

VEGETARIAN
(Fresh packaged, frozen or ambient)

Manufacturers and suppliers to the foodservice sector can enter as many products as they like in all the relevant categories.
