Exhibition centre for Docklands

A proposed £100m exhibition centre in London's Docklands should provide a welcome boost to the capital's hotels when it opens for business in 1998.

A consortium called the London International Exhibition Centre has been selected to develop the 85-acre site on the north side of the Royal Victoria Dock.

Funding has still to be found, but will probably come from overseas. Building workis scheduled to begin in1996, subject to full planning consent from the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC). Plans for a possible second phase include two new hotels of five-star and two/three-star quality.

Michael Howell, deputy general manager of the nearby Tower Thistle Hotel, said he welcomed the plans, provided the necessary communications links were put in place. He added that London was in great need of a facility to compare with Birmingham's NEC.
