Finding a job in human resources

Question

I am currently employed as a human resources manager in London and have ten years' experience. I do not have full Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD) qualifications, but I have a Certificate in Personnel Practice. I seem to be having a problem finding another HR position in a hotel or a restaurant. What can you advise?

Implicit in the information you provide is the belief that perhaps your lack of CIPD status is preventing you from securing a new job. The CIPD qualification is valued by many HR professionals and is quoted as a requirement in the majority of advertisements. However, with your ten years' experience, I doubt whether this alone is a limiting factor. It's difficult to provide you with specific advice without fully understanding the nature of the experience you have and the roles you're applying for, but here are some things you may wish to consider. What is on your shopping list for your new role? Be honest with yourself. Are the roles that you're applying for realistic, taking into account your experience? Many people apply for jobs that they're not really qualified for, on the off chance of success. Make sure that you are applying for the right type of jobs. Look at your CV with a critical eye. Does it sell your experience, achievements to date and strengths? You'll also need to ensure your CV is relevant to the role for which you are applying. You may wish to prioritise information that is important for the role and make sure this has an immediate impact on the reader. A well-written covering letter specific to the role you are interested in demonstrates commitment and interest. Try a variety of approaches to getting a new job. Scour adverts, register with reputable HR recruitment agencies and do some networking. Remember: securing that perfect new job can be hard work, so don't lose heart.
