Former Aramark chef named audit director
A former chef at Aramark has been appointed director of audit and control services for the UK and Spain.
Ian Floody is the latest among a number of Aramark staff who have been promoted to senior positions after starting as chefs, or even cleaners.
Company chief executive Bill Toner is among those who started his career as a chef.
Floody joined Aramark as a chef in 1981 and moved through several management positions, eventually switching from food to figures as a financial controller.
Other success stories include Caroline Clements, who rose from part-time cleaner to general manager of the firm's largest contract, with the Ministry of Defence.
Managers promoted Clements to full-time cleaning supervisor after noticing she had "more than 10 ounces of common sense", said the firm's training director, Jenny Wright. Her talent and enthusiasm were then spotted by personnel chiefs, who promoted her again.
Now she heads a 180-strong team providing food and cleaning services to HMS Excellent, the Royal Navy's training base in Portsmouth.
Wright said that the policy of promoting from within reflected both the training the firm provided and the people employed in the first place.
"Hire the attitude and you can train everything else," she said.
