Fulfilling your true potential

Fulfilling your true potential

Question

I am a recent graduate with a 2:1 in licensed retail management, and an HND (distinction) in hospitality business management and am on a graduate scheme with one of the major players in the pub sector. After seven months the challenge has gone from the position (assistant manager) and the promises of proper training have yet to materialise, despite pulling as many strings as possible and chasing the relevant managers etc.

I also believe that I am not fulfilling my true potential with this company and have little chance, at least not in the short- or medium-terms. Despite many applications and interviews I am still stuck in the rut and am getting left behind. I would be most grateful for any ideas you have that can get my career back on track, get the most out of my current position and for any ideas about other career directions I could consider which will utilise my degree to its full potential.

Á¢Â€ÂœHowever, when it comes to progressing your career and getting full potential from your degree it is up to you to drive and direct the activities that shape your development. If your current employer has promised courses and training that have not materialised then you may want to consider how this reflects on their actual commitment to graduate training. If you have attended a number of interviews without success you need to request feedback on the reasons Á¢Â€Â" an objective view and constructive feedback should help you to identify your development needs and recognise your strengths. If that feedback is not forthcoming this may be a further indicator of the companyÁ¢Â€Â™s commitment to development and to you.

Á¢Â€ÂœIn a competitive and fast-moving industry it is often easier to progress if you have real evidence of achievements where you have added value to the business Á¢Â€Â" you need to look to stand out from the crowd. If you decide that you are committed to your company (or even if you move on to another) set out to show them what you can achieve Á¢Â€Â" identify business-focused opportunities that use your strengths but also allow you to challenge your development needs. Then make sure that your efforts are noticed. Contact with and exposure to your area manager or human resources manager can be a great help Á¢Â€Â" they are likely to recognise talent and be in a position to ensure it is used to the best mutual advantage.

Á¢Â€ÂœThis is a great and stimulating industry to work in Á¢Â€Â" I wish you success in resolving these problems and getting what you want from your career.Á¢Â€Â
