Originally from the Algarve, a cataplana is a traditional Portuguese cooking vessel used for cooking shellfish such as clams and mussels, although it can cook meat too. It consists of twin copper pans joined by a hinge, which clamp shut for cooking in the oven. It can also be used as a serving dish, direct from oven to table.
