Hotel shooting: man accused of murder

A man has appeared in court in the Irish Republic charged with the weekend murder in Limerick of a night manager with the Jurys Doyle Hotel Group in the city.

Grainne Dillon, 24, was found dying from gunshot wounds in the kitchen of Jurys Inn in the city centre early on Saturday morning. She had been shot several times.

The man accused of her murder, Paulo Nascimento, a 26-year-old Portuguese national, from the Algarve, had recently started work as a porter at the hotel. He has been remanded in custody to Limerick Prison to await trial, with the judge ordering that a psychiatric report be prepared on him.

Dillon, from Cork city, was a graduate in hotel and leisure management and had been working as night manager at Jurys Inn for the past six months. In a statement, the hotel group said: "Her death has caused profound grief and shock to all who knew and worked with her. She will be greatly missed."

According to officers investigating the killing, she was the victim of a botched robbery attempt. She had been preparing cash floats when confronted by her killer, they said, and was shot in a bid to get the key to the hotel safe.

They confirmed that the safe had been tampered with and money taken. It was later found hidden near the hotel, together with a shotgun.

The 150-bedroom hotel was full at the time, with more than 300 guests. They included players and supporters of the Harlequins rugby team, who were in Limerick for a European Cup match against Munster.

This was the second tragedy to hit the Jurys Inn in recent months. In November, a four-year-old boy fell to his death from a fifth-storey window at the hotel after wandering away from his parents.
