How can I be interviewed from abroad?

Question

I have been working on a Caribbean island for the past year, organising weddings and special events. Since graduation six years ago, I have worked largely as an in-house catering and banqueting organiser, with my last position being events manager at a prestigious London venue.

I plan to return to the UK at the start of 2003 and would like to experience different areas of event planning, such as conventions and industry trade shows, possibly within the travel sector.

How would potential employers assess me when I am not available for face-to-face interviews?

Following your application, potential employers will conduct a telephone interview if they think you seem suitable. You can either apply directly to companies or use a specialist consultancy. The consultancy will interview you by telephone to find out your requirements, and then arrange telephone appointments with appropriate companies. If your interview is successful, some companies will fund travel for the next stage of the process, depending on the job applied for. If you are applying to a company group, ask whether they have offices or an agent on your island. It's possible that the next interview stage could take place there. If these options are not practical, set up appointments with potential employers and recruitment consultancies before you return to speed up the process.
