Howe wins kikkoman masters

The 1998 Kikkoman Masters competition has been won by Clive Howe (right), executive chef at Goldman Sachs International in London.

Howe, who began his career as a commis chef at London's Dorchester hotel under Anton Mosimann, beat five other finalists at a cook-off at London's Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Hotel on 22 July where he had two hours to create a dish using Kikkoman soy sauce.

His dish of a warm salad of peppered beef fillet (above) wins him a 10-day working trip to Japan to study Oriental cuisine and he also receives a Robot Coupe blender.

The panel of six judges, chaired by chef and restaurateur Alastair Little, included Salon Culinaire director Peter Griffiths and executive chef at London's Four Seasons hotel, Eric Deblond.
