I want to work on reception

Question

I would like to move into the hospitality trade and am hoping to start by doing reception work. However, I don't have any reception experience, although I have worked in office administration for nine years. I am 29 years old.

I would like to know if it would be possible for me to make this move without the necessary experience. My current salary is £13,720. What sort of salary can I expect to earn, bearing in mind that I would also need accommodation?

The hospitality industry is all about commitment and dedication to service, and as long as you can show that you have the desire to learn, there should be options open to you in the post you are looking for.
While different companies will offer different levels of salary and benefits, I think you can look at the following rule of thumb for these roles: A post in London and other key city centres: £11,000-£15,000. This would be a gross salary excluding accommodation. Very few companies in big city centres offer staff accommodation, but they often have staff looking for people to share flats or houses. A post outside key city centres: £8,000-£11,000. This again would be excluding accommodation. However, many provincial hotels have staff accommodation available. They would make a reduction from wages for this benefit, but this would probably work out to be more cost-efficient than renting your own accommodation.
