Scots earn more
Spending by tourists in Scotland grew by 7% last year to £2.66b, according to the Scottish Tourist Board. Overseas visitors spent £965m, up by 2%, while spending from within the UK was up by 11% to £1.7m. The Scots themselves spent £555m, an increase of 39%.
Scot earns more
Donald Macdonald, chief executive of Scottish group Macdonald Hotels, earned more than £200,000 last year, according to the West Lothian-based company's annual report. Macdonald's salary was £195,000, plus benefits of £10,000.
21 Kings on way
Burger King franchisee Gowrings Plc has plans to open a further 21 Burger King restaurants in the West Midlands, creating around 700 jobs. Gowrings, which now operates 24 Burger Kings, has also completed a deal to take over eight existing restaurants.
Pub ban stays
A Crown Court judge has refused to overturn a ban on a £1m pub complex, and has backed a blanket police objection to all new city centre licences. Yates's Wine Lodge had appealed to Durham Crown Court after Sunderland Licensing Justices refused to grant the company a licence for a planned pub and restaurant.
Elite Restaurants is to expand its Tortellini chain of Italian restaurants to nine with the opening of new branches at Tonbridge and Orpington in September and October. The Elite group is planning a stock market flotation in mid-1999.
