HOW do you keep flying insects out of rooms which have open doorways? Aluminium chain insect screens, comprising a rail with full depth chains suspended every half inch, offer an alternative to conventional doors. The barrier effect is obtained from the smallness of the gaps between each chain and the fact that they are in almost continuous movement. The light reflectivity of the aluminium also serves to deter insects.

Another benefit of chain screens is that they do not inhibit ventilation (as with mesh screen doors). The chains are are put in place by hooking over a channel above the door, permitting easy removal for daily washing or security. Plain or striped screens to fit a 198cm deep by 76cm wide doorway are priced from around £84 while screens with a choice of up to nine patterns are priced from £105. A chain screen which carries the words "Fire Exit" prominently is also available at about £140.
