Krispy Kreme plans UK expansion

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, fast becoming one of the USA's favourite snacks, is making plans to come to the UK.

The 223-strong chain, which bakes fresh doughnuts behind glass viewing areas, said last week it was looking for franchisees in Britain as part of a global expansion plan that includes Spain, Australia, Japan and South Korea.

Established in 1937, Krispy Kreme has gained a cult following in recent years, with celebrity patrons such as Madonna, Sting and Susan Sarandon helping to boost sales.

The company went public in 2000 and is now in 34 US states and Canada. Ten stores will open in the USA this summer.
