Life Is A Menu – Michel Roux
This is the story of one of the two most important people responsible for the rejuvenation of gastronomy in England. As Michel Roux concludes in his book, he and his brother, Albert, brought to England the best gift France had to offer and England was receptive.
The book details Michel's life, from his rural beginnings, through his hard first job, to his cooking for, and consorting with, royalty. Each chapter has a menu heading - canapés, soups, hors d'oeuvres and so on - and he recalls anecdotes from his life to fit each category.
Writing as if he is talking to a friend, he puts a lot of detail into his narrative - although I am not sure he ever reveals the real Michel. But the recipes, each with a story to tell, are well selected and must represent Michel's favourite dishes. High achievers who owe their public an insight into their success do it through their autobiographies. Michel has done no more, nor less.
