London pub to host ‘pork pie off' contest for Pie Week
A London pub is to host a "pork pie off" in a bid to support British Pie Week 2014 and global charity Action Against Hunger.
The Great British Bake Off â' which will see up to 20 chefs battle it out to create the best pork pie.
Chefs confirmed as taking part include Matt Reuther (chef at the Princess Victoria), Peter Weeden (Newman Street Tavern), Dom Chapman (The Royal Oak, Parley Street), and TV chef Andy Bates (also known as "The Pie Man").
Each pie will be judged by restaurant critics Joe Warwick and Tom Parker Bowles, and the editor of consumer food magazine Olive, Christine Hayes. The public will also be invited to score the pies on taste and texture.
A sample of the pies, along with complimentary craft beer, will be available to punters who buy a ticket for the event.
Doors open at 7pm, with final judging at 9pm. Each ticket costs £10.
Princess Victoria, in Shepherd's Bush, was originally a tram stop, before being transformed into a Victorian gin palace, and then a pub. Its chef Reuther has worked for No 1 Lombard St, Foliage at the Mandarin Oriental hotel, and Marco Pierre White's three-Michelin starred Oak Room.
British Pie Week takes places from 3-9 March and seeks to champion the best British pies, often in tandem with charity fundraising.
