National Juniorchef crowns winner for 2013

Six young chefs from across the country competed for the title of National Juniorchef 2013 on Friday 17 May at East Kent College.

Matthew England, 15, of Wadebridge School in Cornwall was crowned winner, taking home the trophy and a cheque for £250, with a £300 cheque for his school.

England cooked a main course of canon of spring lamb with gratin potatoes and mint hollandaise sauce, followed by a dessert of chilled lemon souffle.

Head judge, two-Michelin-starred chef Nathan Outlaw said: "I was shocked by the very high standard of entry today. It's an honour to have been asked to judge such a fantastic competition. The stars of the show are the cooks today; these are experiences you can't pay for."

Other judges included Len Unwin, catering lecturer at Sheffield College, and Neil Wiggins, head chef at the award-winning Manor Restaurant at Eastwell Manor, principal sponsor of this year's event.

Speaking after the event England said: "I've never entered a competition like this before, so I'm really happy I won. I would recommend entering National Juniorchef to anyone!"

Jack Button, also from Wadebridge School, was a close second in the competition, and took home a cheque for £150, while Daniel Arscott, from Middlesex came third, winning £100.

A lunch for VIP guests, the finalists and their families was cooked and served by the College's Catering and Hospitality students. East Kent College students were also involved in the competition as runners, assisting the competitors in the kitchen.
