New fire laws delayed

New fire laws for England and Wales have been delayed.

The Government announced it is stalling the introduction of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order for England and Wales because the guidance document will not be ready in time.

The guidance document has been criticised as over complex.

It is not yet known when the law will come into effect, but 1 October is expected to be the earliest common introductory date across Britain. It was originally due 1 April.

The Order will abolish fire certificates, replacing them with fire risk assessments. The responsibility of carrying out fire risk assessments will lie with the employer.

The Scottish Executive has also announced it is delaying its version of the new law.
