Norfolk chef wins National Steak Pie title

A Norfolk chef has been awarded the title of National Steak Pie Champion 2006.

David Brown, head chef at The Hare Arms pub, Kings Lynn, beat five other finalists in a cook off to win the English Beef and Lamb Executive's (EBLEX) award with his steak and peppercorn pie.

Brown said: "I'm so proud of my achievement and I truly believe you won't find a better pie than mine. In my opinion, it's primarily the quality of the meat that makes a great pie."

Brown sources all his beef from a local butcher who rears his own cattle and it was this "deliciously succulent and rich filling of Norfolk beef, together with spicy peppercorns topped with a home-made short-crust pastry" that tipped the balance in his favour according to the judges.

Following an initial paper judging round, 23 finalists were visited by a mystery dinner before the final six were selected for the cook off.
