Pair refused bail after bag thefts

A man and woman accused of stealing bags from women guests in the breakfast rooms of top London hotels have been remanded in custody for a week.

Brian Scanlon, 36, and Jacqueline Rooney, 34, both of Camberwell, had their bail pleas rejected by magistrates at Horseferry Road Court.

Scanlon is charged with stealing a bag with contents valued at £5,600 from a 71-year-old tourist at the London Hilton in Park Lane in April, and a bag plus £270 worth of contents from a 40-year-old tourist at the Forum Hotel in South Kensington in February.

Both are charged with taking bags containing hundreds of pounds worth of contents from two elderly guests at the Park Court Hotel in Lancaster Gate on different dates. They also face various other charges.

The pair were arrested by the Hotel Intelligence Unit of the Metropolitan police. One detective told the court that closed circuit television cameras were used during the investigation.
