Peruvian superfoods chef competition open for entries

The Superfoods Peru Young Chef of the Year 2018 competition is now open for entries.

The competition, run by the Peru Trade and Investment Office, aims to raise awareness of Peruvian superfoods in the UK.

The 2018 competition follows the success of the inaugural year in 2017, where 21-year-old Farah Smith from Westminster Kingsway College was crowned the winner.

Entrants must develop their own original menus and include a different superfood in each course. They are encouraged to research Peruvian cuisine from the coast to the Andean highlands and the jungle, but previous experience isn't required.

The winner will fly to Peru to join chef, Virgilio Martínez Véliz, at his restaurant *Central. The runners up will also be offered placements with Peruvian restaurants Lima and Señor Ceviche in London.

Jaime Cardenas, director of the Peru Trade and Investment Office, said: "The competition will educate tomorrow's top chefs about Peruvian ingredients and cooking with the aim of providing inspiration for their menus and increasing demand for Peruvian products into the future. We want to include the next generation of UK chefs in the excitement about Peruvian cuisine and teach them about the many fantastic ingredients and flavours that come out of Peru."

Entry packs, posters and superfood information sheets are available to download by visiting the website www.perutradeuk.com/chefperu. The competition is open until 2 March 2018 and accepts entries for chefs 25 years old and under.
