PizzaExpress chain faces recycling fine

PizzaExpress has been taken to court for failing to meet the requirements of recycling regulations set down by the Environment Agency (EA).

The high-street pizza chain was called to Uxbridge Magistrates' Court on Tuesday to account for its failure to register with an approved waste-disposal scheme in 2002.

Under the Packaging and Waste Regulations (1997), all companies which produce more than 50 tonnes of packaging waste each year and have an annual turnover exceeding £20m are required to be registered with the EA to recycle their own waste, or to be signed up with a compliance scheme.

Compliance schemes allow businesses to pay an EA-approved company to recycle their waste.

The EA said PizzaExpress has traditionally had a good record of compliance in waste recycling but broke regulations following a dispute over an invoice in 2002. It faces a maximum fine of £5,000.
