Regent inns shock hits pub sector

A SHOCK profits warning last week from pub group Regent Inns sent share prices across the pub sector tumbling, with Bass down by 4.8%, Slug & Lettuce 10.8% and JD Wetherspoon 8.1%.

Airport services group Alpha Airports took a 12.6% dive following a downbeat trading statement blamed on a fall in passenger and cargo traffic from Asia.

Merchant bank Goldman Sachs put the heat on Cliveden shares, up 7.5%, after it confirmed it was in talks over a possible bid for the hotel group.

Granada Group, which has suffered falls for two weeks running, bounced back with a 7.1% lift. Shares in other hotel groups continued to drop last week while the City awaited acquisition news from both Vaux and Thistle.

Restaurant groups also slipped, with Groupe Chez Gérard down 9% and PizzaExpress down 4.8%. But shares are expected to recover after acquisition announcements by both companies this week.
