River Café team to open sister site in Mayfair

The team behind the Michelin-starred River Café is to open a sister Italian restaurant in London's Mayfair in 2017.

Owner and chef Ruth Rogers (pictured) and chefs Sian Wyn Owen and Joseph Trivelli, along with managers Vashti Armit and Charles Pullan, are set to oversee the new site, which will be in a new building below the Gagosian gallery on Grosvenor Hill, near Berkeley Square.

The menu will focus on Italian food; the same cuisine as the original restaurant.

This will be the first time the group has opened a new site apart from the original.

The River Café was founded as an office canteen in 1987 by Rogers and her business partner, the late Rose Gray, but would later win a Michelin star, and become known for its training of chefs who would go on to become well-known, including Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.

Speaking to the London Evening Standard [http://www.standard.co.uk/goingout/restaurants/river-cafe-chef-ruth-rogers-plans-sister-restaurant-in-the-heart-of-mayfair-a3104746.html] about the new project, Rogers explained that the restaurant team had previously considered opening a new site, but had always just improved the first restaurant or worked on a new cookbook instead.

She added: "We wanted an open kitchen on the ground floor and it is very difficult in central London to find a site with a footprint big enough for that. So when we were shown this place, it was love at first sight. It is quiet, hidden Mayfair and like the River Cafe it will become its own destination."
