Salmonella outbreak at pub carvery

A salmonella food-poisoning outbreak originating from a pub carvery has claimed 17 victims so far.

Diners and the chef of the pub became ill after eating at the Swans Nest at Exminster, Devon, on 29 March. Two diners were treated in hospital for several days.

Clare Huppler, environmental health manager for Teignbridge District Council, described the outbreak as "very serious".

"We get salmonella notifications on a regular basis but only one a year of this size," she said.

Investigations found that the particular strain was salmonella typhimurium, which is resistant to heat and two types of antibiotics.
