Should I go to university or join a trainee management scheme?

Question

I am an 18-year-old student at Barnfield college in Luton, Bedfordshire, doing an Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education in hospitality and catering management. This course ends in June. I am torn between going to university and going to work. If I choose work, should I go on a trainee management scheme? My main area of interest is conference and banqueting. What sort of opportunities are available to me?

There is no right or wrong answer here, so you really have to look at the pros and cons and decide what is best for you. I have spoken to many graduates over the years and they have informed me that by doing university courses they have gained a wealth of knowledge. Students learn all the theory aspects about the catering industry, from operating the personnel department to analysing profit and loss accounts. Universities also organise work placements that allow you to gain essential practical experience. However, you have to fund your way through university, so budgeting can be tough, especially with most courses lasting four years, and many students leave university with huge debts if they are not careful. I have also come across people who have undertaken trainee management programmes, which provide a thorough guide to management in the industry. Trainee management schemes allow you to gain valuable hands-on management experience by learning and developing your skills with those who are already experienced. Trainees do have to start at the beginning, so that will be reflected in the salary. I would recommend that you speak to previous graduates and trainees so you can ask them about their experiences. Your college lecturer, who you could also ask for advice, should be able to help you in contacting former students.
