Singer Paul Heaton to cycle 1,000 miles to highlight British pub closures

Former Beautiful South and Housemartins singer Paul Heaton is set to start a 1,000-mile cycling tour to highlight the closure of British pubs.

Heaton's trip, which begins today, will see him drink a half at Coronation Street's fictional Rover's Return pub in Manchester, before he gives his first performance along the route at the Flying Horse in Rochdale.

"I'm looking forward to pedalling around the country to promote cycling and the British pub," the singer told Sky News.

"Both are very close to my heart. I've been cycling all my life and the British pub has provided most of my favourite stop-off points.

"It saddens me to hear about so many pubs closing on a weekly basis so I want to do all I can to get people back to their local."
