S&N keeps optimistic

Scottish & Newcastle has reported a season of mixed conditions, with the impact of the World Cup and poor weather posing "short-term challenges".

The UK retail business, which includes 1,500 pubs, Chef & Brewer restaurants and Premier Lodge hotels, saw like-for-like sales rise by just 1%.

Speaking last week at the group's annual general meeting, chairman Brian Stewart said that the first half of this year had been "satisfactory".

"We remain confident of meeting our financial and commercial objectives for the year," he said.
