Question:

"I'm in my last year of college (level 3) and I am hoping to go and work in london or in the south. Could you give me some idea of a good place to start as I want to get some good experience under my belt. I am keen to begin in somewhere well known or with a good reputation."

"I would suggest that you firstly decide which sector of hospitality you would like to work in. Would you prefer a restaurant chain, a hotel, a bar or pub, food service management company etc? Think also about the type of department you would like to work in, perhaps concentrating on two or three to keep your options open. In order to search for jobs, start by looking at the various job websites to see what vacancies are available. Also use the Web to look up the details of companies you would like to work for, they often have vacancies advertised and details on how to apply to the positions. There are also numerous industy journals out on the market as well as vacancies advertised in the National newspapers on certain days of the week. If you are looking to travel and gain international hospitality experience I would definitely suggest working for an international group, and stay for at least six months to a year before gaining a transfer abroad if that is want you want. The ideal job for someone in your position is with a company, large or small, who are prepared to invest in training. That way you can learn on the job, attend courses and gain the recognition which can lead you to a fast climb up the career ladder. As you may or may not have much work experience yet, make sure when you attend any interviews you sell most importantly your interpersonal skills as that will most certainly help you get a foot in the door. Hope this is of use. Good luck and all the best with your career." Do you have a question for our experts? [E-mail us now, help is at hand.
